The Old School House

Pulborough, West Sussex

Developed as a joint venture with Reside Developments, this mixed conversion and new build project featured 11 houses and two private workshops in the thriving West Sussex town of Pulborough.

Situated just a few hundred metres from the village centre, with stunning views across water meadows, the site was previously the old Arundale School and prior to that, a dairy.  The concept to bring this redundant site back to life was to convert the old school house into two houses and build nine new houses in place of the school’s tennis courts, gym and playground.  This included landscaped courtyards, alleyways, nooks and crannies typical of a Sussex village.

The original boundary wall and post box were retained and the dairy’s roof renovated to enhance the existing street scene and the design included the addition of an archway to allow vehicular access to the newly created courtyard within.  Build materials were carefully selected to blend with the existing vernacular with the use of local Warnham red stock bricks, clay plain roof tiles, white render and white feather edge boarding.
